Joyce Opal Meyers

Joyce Meyers, 88, of Wynne, passed away Thursday, September 11, 2014 at CrossRidge Community Hospital. Joyce was born in Forrest City and grew up in the Jolly Ellis community. After graduating high school in Wynne, she taught grades 1 thru 8 in a one room school house. Joyce met and married Charles Meyers and began working at Rainfair Industries before attending Beauty School in Forrest City. Her career as a hair stylist began when her husband enclosed their carport to build her a beauty shop on Martin Drive. She was joined by her friend Leaverdia Lamb and they co-founded the LaJoy Beauty Shop. (The La came from Leaverdia and Joy came from Joyce.) LaJoy was located near what is now the Wynne Fire Dept. Joyce later built, owned and operated the luxurious Charme’ Beauty Salon (House of Beauty) all the while working in Melba Gliedt’s framing shop. Joyce volunteered to work for Ann Moore at the Modern Beauty Shop while Ann had her son. They became co-workers and life long friends. During her career as a beautician, Joyce got the opportunity to adopt a young boy that we came to know as Robert. However for her to do this, she had to give up her career causing her to sell Charme’. Later Charme’ became her place of employment again where she worked with Ann Moore until she was 80 years old. Joyce was a charter member of Union Avenue Baptist Church. She held almost every position in the church but her pride and joy was her 5th and 6th grade girls class which she taught for many years. Joyce’s church was a priority and she loved being one of the Joy Singers. Joyce gave her life to the Lord at an early age and continued to serve the Lord all her life. Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, Riley and Virginia Evans Surratt; husband, Charles Eugene Meyers and son, Robert Riley Meyers. She is survived by one granddaughter, Jessica Lynn Meyers of Jonesboro. Visitation will be Tuesday, September 16, 2014 from 6 to 8 PM at Kernodle Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Wednesday, at 2 PM at Kernodle Funeral Home with burial in Crosslawn Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Union Avenue Baptist Church.
