Lt. Cmdr. Marguerite Louise Burt

Lt. Commander Marguerite Louise Burt, 96, of Wynne, Arkansas, passed away Monday, December 1, 2014 in Wynne, Arkansas, "an outstanding leader with extraordinary vision". Marguerite was born on September 7, 1918 in Wright City, Oklahoma, the first child of James Edward and Bertha Davis Burt. She had one sister, Katherine Burt Glenn. Her education included graduation from the Wynne High School, the Baptist Hospital School of Nursing in Memphis, Tennessee, George Peabody College for Teachers in Nashville, Tennessee, Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, and Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana. On December 4, 1955, she began her military career in Washington, D. C. She was assigned to the World Relief Program in Gondar, Ethiopia. There she worked with a group of 19 international person’s establishing the first medical facility in the country. After spending three years in Ethiopia, she returned to the States and was discharged on September 9, 1958. She resumed work with the Veterans Administration and was assigned to Little Rock; Boston, Massachusetts; St. Louis, Missouri, Washington, D. C., Northport, Long Island, New York, and in San Antonio, Texas until she retired in March of 1985. She moved back to Wynne and helped organize the Cross County Veterans Committee serving as its' only chairman. She was a community volunteer in numerous activities organizing the Veterans Memorial, establishing a Veterans Museum, bringing Cross County a Cobra Helicopter static display, holding annual ceremonies on Veterans Day and Memorial Day, placing flags on veterans' graves in Cross County cemeteries, refurbishing the local National Guard Armory and was instrumental in establishing Arkansas State Veteran’s Cemetery at Birdeye. Marguerite was awarded Citizen of the Year by the Wynne Chamber of Commerce and Arkansas Volunteerism Award presented by KARK-TV Channel 4 in 1994. She was preceded in death by her sister Katherine Burt Glenn in 1995 and parents, Edward and Bertha Davis Burt. "The World is full of great things and I want to try them all." - Lt. Cmdr. Marguerite L. Burt Graveside services will be Saturday at 11 AM at Cogbill Cemetery with Kernodle Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
